What is Logistics?

Warehouse systems from design to service. 11 min video.
What would the world be without logistics? Without storage systems, shelves would be empty in stores throughout the world! From design, including mechanical development, electronics, and IT, through to start-up, service, and system operation, people of varied backgrounds with different areas of specialization are involved in creating a logistics center that will operate around the clock. WITRON explains their tasks.

Logistics Quotes:

  • “I say an hour lost at a bottleneck is an hour out of the entire system. I say an hour saved at a non-bottleneck is worthless. Bottlenecks govern both throughput and inventory.”   ~ Eliyahu M. Goldratt, The Goal.
  • “Quality is free. It’s not a gift, but it’s free. The ‘unquality’ things are what cost money.”  ~ Phil Crosby.
  • “All we are doing is looking at the time line, from the moment the customer gives us an order to the point when we collect the cash. And we are reducing the time line by reducing the non-value adding wastes.”  ~ Taiichi Ohno.
  • “You will not find it difficult to prove that battles, campaigns, and even wars have been won or lost primarily because of logistics.”  ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • “Every breakthrough business idea begins with solving a common problem. The bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity. I discovered a big one when I took apart an IBM PC. I made two interesting discoveries: The components were all manufactured by other companies, and the system that retailed for $3,000 cost about $600 in parts.”  ~ Michael Dell.
  • “Two basic rules of life are: 1) Change is inevitable. 2) Everybody resists change.”  ~ W. Edwards Deming.

Tim Cook Quotes, CEO Apple.

Steve Jobs hired Tim Cook to improve the Apple Supply Chain.  The Apple Supply Chain is now one of the best in the world.  Tim Cook went from Apple’s Chief Procurement Officer to being Apple’s CEO.  Below is an assortment of Tim Cook quotes.

  • “The reality is, is that we love competition, at Apple. We think it makes us all better. But we want people to invent their own stuff.”  ~Tim Cook, Apple CEO Tim Cook Supply Chain guru.
  • “I’d rather Apple cannibalize Apple than somebody else cannibalize Apple.” ~ Tim Cook, brought in by Steve Jobs to improve the Apple Supply Chain.
  • “Price is rarely the most important thing. A cheap product might sell some units. Somebody gets it home and they feel great when they pay the money, but then they get it home and use it and the joy is gone.” ~Tim Cook
  • “Some people see innovation as change, but we have never really seen it like that. It’s making things better.” ~Tim Cook
  • “We’re very simple people at Apple. We focus on making the world’s best products and enriching people’s lives.” ~Tim Cook
  • “We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain… What we will not do – and never have done – is stand still or turn a blind eye to problems in our supply chain. On this you have my word.” ~Tim Cook
  • Let your joy be in your journey – not in some distant goal.” ~ Tim Cook
  • Too often people think about intuition as the same as relying on luck or faith. At least as I see it, nothing could be further from the truth. Intuition can tell you, of the doors that are open to you, which one you should walk through. But intuition cannot prepare you for what’s on the other side of that door.” ~Tim Cook
  • We have to make sure, at Apple, that we stay true to focus, laser focus – we know we can only do great things a few times, only on a few products.” ~Tim Cook
  • “There’s this thing in technology, almost a disease, where the definition of success is making the most. How many clicks did you get, how many active users do you have, how many units did you sell? Everybody in technology seems to want big numbers. Steve [Jobs] never got carried away with that. He focused on making the best.” ~Tim Cook
  • “There are times in all of our lives when a reliance on gut or intuition just seems more appropriate—when a particular course of action just feels right. And interestingly I’ve discovered it’s in facing life’s most important decisions that intuition seems the most indispensable to getting it right.” ~Tim Cook
  • “Creativity and innovation are something you can’t flowchart out.” ~Tim Cook
  • “I don’t really think anything Microsoft does puts pressure on Apple.” ~ Tim Cook
  • “We have to make sure, at Apple, that we stay true to focus, laser focus – we know we can only do great things a few times, only on a few products.” ~Tim Cook
  • “Companies that get confused, that think their goal is revenue or stock price or something. You have to focus on the things that lead to those.” ~Tim Cook
  • “Apple has always had the discipline to make the bold decision to walk away.” ~Tim Cook
  • “We are the most focused company that I know of or have read of or have any knowledge of. We say no to good ideas every day. We say no to great ideas in order to keep the amount of things we focus on very small in number, so that we can put enormous energy behind the ones we do choose…..It’s not just saying yes to the right products, it’s saying no to many products that are good ideas, but just not nearly as good as other ones.”  ~ Tim Cook, CEO Apple.
  • “For the most important decisions in your life, trust your intuition, and then work with everything you have, to prove it right.”  ~ Tim Cook
  • “We’re very simple people at Apple. We focus on making the world’s best products and enriching people’s lives.” ~ Tim Cook
  • “You can only do so many things great, and you should cast aside everything else.” ~ Tim Cook

  • “I want women to get paid more. I want to teach them to negotiate so they get paid more.” ~ Sheryl Sandberg
  • “You have to persuade yourself that you absolutely don’t care what happens. If you don’t care, you’ve won. I absolutely promise you, in every serious negotiation, the man or woman who doesn’t care is going to win.”  ~ Felix Dennis
  • “Focus on the lowest total cost of ownership, not the lowest price.” ~EverythingSupplyChain.com
  • “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” ~ Sun Tzu
  • “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” ~ Douglas MacArthur
  • “The best move you can make in negotiation is to think of an incentive the other person hasn’t even thought of – and then meet it.” ~ Eli Broad
  • “We tend to think that, in a traditional organisation, people are producing results because management wants results, but the essence of a high-quality organisation is people producing results because they want the results. It’s puzzling we find that hard to understand, that if people are really enjoying, they’ll innovate, they’ll take risks, they’ll have trust with one another because they are really committed to what they’re doing and it’s fun” ~ Peter Senge
  • “What business strategy is all about-what distinguishes it from all other kinds of business planning-is, in a word, competitive advantage. Without competitors there would be no need for strategy, for the sole purpose of strategic planning is to enable the company to gain, as efficiently as possible, a sustainable edge over its competitors.” ~ Kenichi Ohmae
  • “The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them” ~ Denis Watley
  • “Negotiation is not a policy. It’s a technique. It’s something you use when it’s to your advantage, and something that you don’t use when it’s not to your advantage.”  ~ John Bolton
  • “You don’t want to negotiate the price of simple things you buy every day.” ~ Jeff Bezos

“Our idea was that these computers were going to free us and allow us to organize. They were going to empower us. We could sit down and write programs that did more than our company’s programs on their big million-dollar computers did. And little fifth-graders would go into companies and write a better program than the top gurus being paid the top salary, and it was going to turn the tables over. We were excited by this revolutionary talk.” ~ Steve Wozniak

“Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes.  It is best to admit them quickly and get on with improving your other innovations.”  ~ Steve Jobs

“We have to make sure, at Apple, that we stay true to focus, laser focus – we know we can only do great things a few times, only on a few products.” ~ Tim Cook

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like.  Design is how it works.”  ~ Steve Jobs

“Apple has changed every day since I have been here. But the DNA of the company, the thing that makes our heart beat, is a maniacal focus on making the best products in the world. In creating these great products we focus on enriching people’s lives – a higher cause for the product.” ~ Tim Cook, made huge improvements to the Apple Supply Chain

“Too often people think about intuition as the same as relying on luck or faith. At least as I see it, nothing could be further from the truth. “We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.” ~ Steve Jobs, co-founder Apple Inc.

And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ~ Steve Jobs

“We are the most focused company that I know of or have read of or have any knowledge of.

“My model for business is The Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other’s kind of negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That’s how I see business: great things in business are never done by one person, they’re done by a team of people.” ~ Steve Jobs

“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.  The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.  It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”  ~ Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple
