Good to Great

This is video review for the book Good To Great by Jim Collins, produced by Callibrain, employee engagement through social collaboration and execution discipline.

  • “For no matter what we achieve, if we don’t spend the vast majority of our time with people we love and respect, we cannot possibly have a great life. But if we spend the vast majority of our time with people we love and respect – people we really enjoy being on the bus with and who will never disappoint us – then we will almost certainly have a great life, no matter where the bus goes. The people we interviewed from the good-to-great companies clearly loved what they did, largely because they loved who they did it with.”  ~ Jim Collins, Good to Great

UPS trucks never turn left

Find out why UPS trucks never turn left.  Senior VP Bob Stoffel explains how a policy of only making right turns saves the company both time and money.  Great story on why UPS is one of the great supply chain companies.

  • “The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.” ~ Bill Gates
  • “If you don’t pay appropriate attention to what has your attention, it will take more of your attention than it deserves.”  ~ David Allen
  • “Every day we are paying more for energy than we should due to poor insulation, inefficient lights, appliances, and heating and cooling equipment – money we could save by investing in energy efficiency.” ~ Bernie Sanders
  • “A particular shot or way of moving the ball can be a player’s personal signature, but #efficiency of performance is what wins the game for the team.” ~ Pat Riley
  • “Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, so go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success.” ~ Thomas Watson
  • “Obviously, the highest type of efficiency is that which can utilize existing material to the best advantage.” ~ Jawaharlal Nehru
  • “Action is the foundational key to all success.” ~ Pablo Picasso
  • “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.” ~ Peter F. Drucker
  • “Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.” ~ Stephen Covey

IKEA’s Supply Chain

IKEA has an amazing supply chain.  IKEA’s founder, Ingvar Kamprad, seems to have many similarities with Sam Walton.

IKEA Quotes:

  • “To design a desk which may cost $1,000 is easy for a furniture designer, but to design a functional and good desk which shall cost $50 can only be done by the very best.” ~ Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA founder.
  • “I could regularly travel first class, but having money in abundance doesn’t seem like a good reason to waste it. Why should I choose first class? To be offered a glass of champagne from the air hostess? If it helped me arrive at my destination more quickly, then maybe.” ~ Ingvar Kamprad, Supply Chain Guru
  • “Making mistakes is the privilege of the active. It is always the mediocre people who are negative, who spend their time proving that they were not wrong.” ~ Ingvar Kamprad
  • “Waste of resources is a mortal sin at IKEA.”  ~ Ingvar Kamprad
  • “I’m a bit tight with money, but so what? I look at the money I’m about to spend on myself and ask myself if IKEA’s customers can afford it… I could regularly travel first class, but having money in abundance doesn’t seem like a good reason to waste it.. If there is such a thing as good leadership, it is to give a good example. I have to do so for all the IKEA employees.”  ~ Ingvar Kamprad

Lean Manufacturing

What is lean manufacturing?  This is all about continuous improvement.

  • “If you are going to do kaizen continuously you’ve got to assume that things are a mess. Too many people just assume that things are all right the way they are. Aren’t you guys convinced that the way you’re doing things is the right way? That’s no way to get anything done. Kaizen is about changing the way things are. If you assume that things are all right the way they are, you can’t do kaizen. So change something!” ~ Taiichi Ohno, father of Toyota Production System (TPS)

Ever wonder how IKEA does their design?  I was at IKEA the other day and was amazed how they packaged a dresser.  The design was so efficient and easy to put together.

  • “A negotiator should observe everything. You must be part Sherlock Holmes, part Sigmund Freud.” ~ Victor Kiam

  • “One of the best ways to persuade others is by listening to them.”  ~ Dean Rusk
  • “You have to persuade yourself that you absolutely don’t care what happens. If you don’t care, you’ve won. I absolutely promise you, in every serious negotiation, the man or woman who doesn’t care is going to win.” ~ Felix Dennis
  • “Never cut what you can untie.” ~ Joseph Joubert
  • “The most difficult thing in any negotiation, almost, is making sure that you strip it of the emotion and deal with the facts.” ~ Howard Baker
