Jedi Mind Tricks to Persuade Others

Daniel Pink’s “Jedi Mind Tricks” are a set of persuasion techniques that can be used to influence people’s behavior. They are based on the principles of autonomy, mastery, and purpose.

Here are three of Pink’s Jedi Mind Tricks:

  1. Give people autonomy. People are more likely to be persuaded if they feel like they have control over their own lives and decisions. When you are trying to persuade someone, give them some choices and let them feel like they are in the driver’s seat.
  2. Help people feel mastery. People are more likely to be persuaded if they feel like they are good at something. When you are trying to persuade someone, focus on their strengths and help them feel like they are capable of achieving their goals.
  3. Connect people to purpose. People are more likely to be persuaded if they feel like they are doing something meaningful and worthwhile. When you are trying to persuade someone, connect them to the larger purpose of what you are asking them to do.

Here are some examples of how to use Pink’s Jedi Mind Tricks in everyday life:

  • If you are trying to persuade your child to clean their room, you could ask them: “On a scale of one to ten, one meaning you’re not ready at all; ten meaning you’re ready to do it right now. How ready are you, Maria, to clean your room?” This gives Maria some autonomy in the decision-making process. She is the one who gets to decide how ready she is to clean her room.
  • If you are trying to persuade your boss to approve a new project, you could focus on their strengths and how the project would allow them to use their skills and talents. You could also connect the project to the company’s mission and vision. For example, you could say: “This project would allow us to tap into your expertise in product development and create a new product that would meet the needs of our customers and help us achieve our mission of being the leading provider of innovative products.”
  • If you are trying to persuade a friend to volunteer for a cause you care about, you could focus on the impact that their volunteerism would have. You could tell them about the people who would be helped by their volunteerism and how it would make a difference in the world.

Pink’s Jedi Mind Tricks are powerful tools that can be used to persuade people in a positive and ethical way. By giving people autonomy, helping them feel mastery, and connecting them to purpose, you can increase your chances of getting them to say yes.

Motivation Quotes.

  • “Impossible is just a small word that is thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they’ve been given to explore the power they have, to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It is a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!” ~Muhammad Ali
  • “There is nothing impossible to him who will try.” ~Alexander the Great
  • “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” ~ Harriet Tubman
  • “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” ~Anthony Robbins
  • “Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!” ~ Anne Frank

It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” ~ Rocky Balboa
